This small mechanical sculpture is handmade in solid brass with stainless steel fasteners and spring. Designed to slip into a pocket and store treasures, it opens with a push and snaps shut with a simple touch.
Each "pod" is shaped individually, with the hammer marks as evidence of the forming process. This gives them each a unique character and personality. The surface is a simple brushed finish, nothing too shiny or precious, then museum waxed. While the wax will slow the darkening that happens with handling, they are designed to patina with age.

Inspired by a Lady-slipper Orchid, this mechanical sculpture opens by bending it’s tail under the body, causing the wings to open and revealing a pair of legs to stand on. The copper and brass were left untreated so the natural patina of touching would color it; in these photos here, it has just begun.
